Changing out shoes with
interchangeable tops is literally a snap!
Sunday, July 15, 2007
Tina Caronna, a bond broker
who lives in Cordova, has about 300 pairs of shoes. In the
past when she traveled, she packed a separate suitcase for
shoes. Now she packs only two pairs, but is never without
the perfect shoes for her outfits. Caronna wears
Onesole by Quick Change Artist, shoes with interchangeable
tops that snap onto the sole. Band tops come in an endless
variety of silk screen prints, or you can snap on strappy
tops with metal or enamel ornaments, Swarovski crystal
hearts and more.
The shoes come in three heel
sizes and cost $125 for the lower-heeled style and $140 for
the highest one. The price includes one plain band and your
choice of two others. Tops bought separately are $12.99 to
$29.99.
Onesole is the brainchild of
Dominique McClain Barteet, a pharmacist who runs a
multimillion-dollar pharmacy called Drug Store and More in
West Palm Beach. Barteet owned 600 pairs of shoes when she
realized most of them were the same shoe style. All she
really needed were new tops. She founded the interchangeable
shoe business in 2002, and business is booming.
"We sell a lot of them," said
Jan Durbin, co-owner with Joyce Jennings of Two Girls & a
Trunk in Trinity Commons in Cordova, which first started
selling them in February. "They were hits right off. People
who buy the shoes come back and buy 10 to 15 tops for them."
One day recently, the store
had Onesole shoppers from Washington, West Virginia and
Chicago.
Other stores in this area that
carry the shoes include Mori Luggage and Gifts in Memphis
and Germantown and The Accessory Collection at Laurelwood
Shopping Center. You can check for stores in other areas at
www.onesole.com.
Shoppers can select from a
catalog of hundreds of tops, or they can have prints
created.
Send the company a photo of
your pets, grandchildren, etc., and it will put the image on
your shoes for $29.99.
Send a swatch of clothing and
get a print to match. Special orders usually take at least
four days, Jennings said.
The soles come in black or
brown with wedge heels that are 11/2 inches and about 2
inches with a 3-inch chunky heel. There's also a cork style.
The bands come in four sizes
and are made of a thick, comfortable, stretch foam material
(like a diver's suit) bordered in seatbelt material for
strength. Snaps are large and sturdy. Foot beds conform to
the foot for extra comfort.
Caronna said her band tops
wash well in shampoo without fading. She notes that feet
will sweat under the foam tops in the brunt of summer heat.
But that hasn't stopped her from buying 50 tops.
"I wouldn't travel without
them," said Caronna. To see clients, she may wear a jacket
and skirt and 3-inch Onesole with a metal medallion top. For
dinner, she may switch to black capris pants and a strappy
top with a bright, multi-colored ornament. "Everybody
comments on those," she said. "Customers want to try them
on."
Onesole shoes also come in
school emblem prints, the newest of which is the University
of Memphis Tigers. The highest heel can also accommodate
clog tops, which the store will have for fall.
Shoes are
from Two Girls & a Trunk. Our model is Melanie Towery from
Colors Agency Inc.

Change shoes with just
the flip of a top
Wednesday, July 04, 2007
By
Marylynne Pitz, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Women
who pack for business or pleasure trips know the problem
well. How can they limit themselves to two pairs of shoes
when they MUST have a sparkling sandal to match a fancy
cocktail dress?
Dominique Barteet, founder of Quick Change Artist, appears
to have the solution. Her Onesole line of open-toed sandals,
clogs and strappy shoes for evening come with
interchangeable tops made of soft, stretchy neoprene that
can be snapped off and on a sandal bottom made of
polyurethane or a cork wedge in a flash.
Ms.
Barteet, 46, a pharmacist who lives in Palm Beach Gardens,
Fla., realized that she often bought the same basic style of
sandal. (She once owned 600 pairs of shoes.)
After
Chad, her chocolate lab, died two years ago, she customized
a computer mouse pad with pictures of him. The mouse pad
material was similar to neoprene, the stretchy fabric used
to make wet suits for SCUBA divers. From her former husband,
who sold boats, Ms. Barteet knew about the power of strong
snaps used to keep covers on Isinglass sport fishing boats
in 70-mph winds.
And
that's when her idea for a shoe with interchangeable tops
began to fit together. Ms. Barteet decided to create
different styles of sandal tops that were made out of
neoprene, going so far as to buy a SCUBA wet suit and
cutting it up.
The
tops, which have four snaps sewn inside, snap on and off a
dozen different styles of open-toed shoe bottoms that are
sandals, clogs or dressy evening sandals. There are even
sandal tops embellished with Swarovski crystals. A shoe
style known as the duet allows the wearer to create a
two-toned effect with red and black or blue and green tops,
to cite just two examples.
Ms.
Barteet started her company six years ago, and it now turns
out 400,000 shoes a year.
On a
recent trip to Dubai, Ms. Barteet packed two pairs of
sandals and eight tops. "They go along wherever I go," she
said, adding that one of the more popular shoe bases is made
of polyurethane because it's so lightweight.
Depending on the style, the sandals cost $80 for a shoe
suitable for the beach to $109 to $125.
You
can order them off her Web site,
www.onesole.com, and they are sold in Private Gallery, a
chain of 15 stores in the Southeast. They're also sold in
Hilton and Marriott hotels in Hawaii and California.

If the Shoe Fits... Don't be shy in adding shoes to your inventory because
the demand is great! Consumers are spending nearly $50 billion on 1.3
billion pairs of shoes a year in the U.S. alone. (I don't feel so
bad now - I only have about 129 pair!) Kaye Davis, Director of Fashion for
AmericasMart says, "Shoes are now the number one-selling accessory. You
don't have to be a size 0 to buy a cute pair of shoes and get instant
gratification. While heels have reached skyscraper heights,
functionality is the name of the game. Women want fashion, but they're all
about taking good care of themselves. "It's fashion and function
together", Davis says. "You'll see the fashion and the sexy stiletto
worn with narrow-legged jeans - but women are looking for comfort."
fashionistas will be shying away from pointed toes and will be looking for
bigger, clunky heels and round-toed shoes reminiscent of the 70's. The wedge
will continue to be "hot"........

Snap-On Shoes As Versatile As You

There is a new way to get more versatility
from your shoes -- it's a new kind of shoe called Onesole.
Here's how they work: You buy a base sole and
then you pick the top of the shoe and you just snap it on.
Each sole comes with a basic black top and
your choice of two other tops. There are different colors and prints and you
can even get a custom picture of your pet or your loved one.
The top of the Onesole shoe is made of
neoprene, which is what wet suits are made of.
The shoes run from $27 to $100. "It's a good height. You could wear it with
shorts, capris, long pants -- I like this," said one woman who tried out the
new shoe. Most women who tried them said they are the
perfect pair for packing. "I can match up all my outfits to one pair of
soles and throw them in the bag and I'm off. I don't have to carry four,
five or six pairs of shoes," said Falah Crouch.

That’s right: Shoes
where you customize the top like a cell phone plate. I
guess it was only a matter of time before someone really
ran with the idea. These are called Onesole
and are made by the company Quick Change Artist.
The philosophy here is that the part of most sandals
that most people see is the top, so why not make it
interchangeable? If you have the soles in various styles
(heel height and color), then you can just buy different
tops cheaply for a different look. The mostly neoprene
shoe tops easily snap on and off.
Some explanation
from the Palm Beach, Florida founder Dominique McClain
Barteet:
Quick Change Artist’s Onesole shoe idea is a 20
year vision that came to fruition in the year 2002.
We wanted to create a shoe that would be versatile,
fun, economical, and easy for travel. You can
virtually have a closet full of different shoes with
a couple of our soles and some tops. Each sole has
interchangeable tops that fit every sole with just a
couple of snaps. This allows you to match any outfit
economically and with great comfort. We also have
accessories such as t-shirts, want books, hanging
straps, and bags to collect your different shoe
tops. Our idea is patented and we are constantly
expanding every day to fulfill an innovative shoe
niche in today’s market......

New
Concept in Women’s Shoes is a Snap!
November 30, 2004
(West Palm
Beach, Fla.) - Convertibles are becoming popular again in South Florida.
This Christmas Onesole Shoes are riding the wave of popularity with the
newest and most innovative concept to come along in the shoe industry in
quite awhile. The Onesole concept gives wearers the option of
interchangeable tops on comfortable stylish soles. Every top fits every
style shoe and can be changed with a snap. “The
choices are endless for the custom tops, says founder Dominique Barteet, a
Florida pharmacist who was tired of having a closet full of shoes she would
wear once.
She recently patented the
idea and expanded on the tops with experimentation, so that they could be
matched to any outfit or fabric, monogrammed, embellished with crystals, or
personalized with photos. The one-of-a-kind tops snap on quickly and allow
you to go from dressy to casual in seconds. A Onesole
purchase gives the buyer the option of endless tops with one set of soles
and now, with the latest advances in technology, you can have your favorite
photograph placed on the shoe tops, or match your favorite skirt or handbag
to the shoe tops. “The customized process only takes a day and you can have
a custom top that can be changed with a snap for easier travel and endless
possibilities,” Barteet said.
Onesole
Shoes are currently available for sale on the website and at the factory
based in West Palm Beach. Soon the shoes will appear in boutiques across
the country. For more information you can visit Quick Change Artist at
